John comes to his painting and drawing practice from a sculptural foundation in assemblage. He aims to allow a flow in interaction between concept and materials and to engage with emergent opportunities. His psychology background naturally draws him to the possibilities for layers of meaning often teasing the edge between closure and open dialogue with the work. He likes to question fixed assumptions and the idea of absolutes. He has an abstract practice and also a figurative practice and enjoys working in the hinterland between apparent opposites shaping energy and emotion in the work.
